Below are details about our new Applied Physics (APP) graduate student exchange program with research universities and institutes in two European cities – Toulouse, France and Mainz, Germany. Strong research relationships already exist between Rice and these research centers, and many Rice graduate students have visited them for collaborations during the past decade. In addition, graduate students from Toulouse have been visiting Rice for the past year and from Mainz for the past 4 years. To participate, students and their advisors must submit a 2-page proposal describing the indended research plan to APCAC.
The aim of this program is to establish our educational relationships in a more formal manner by initiating a system for Rice APP graduate students to spend research time at these universities given that modern research is an international endeavor and rewards the students that participate in it as such. Â Besides course credit, our students will be given opportunities for cultural engagement and collaboration with researchers and students in these host countries.
Research in a foreign laboratory will count as one elective course, designated APPL 750, towards completion of the Rice student’s Applied Physics PhD during the student’s fall semester abroad. Additional transfer course credit is available if the student chooses and completes one of the foreign graduate courses listed below, and will count towards the 5 elective course credit requirement of the degree and will be listed on the student's transcript as TRAN 500. Additional foreign elective courses beyond those listed can be suggested by the student and advisor in a similar manner currently for adding new Rice electives, by petitioning APCAC for approval. No foreign courses can replace the core courses in the APP curriculum.
This program is open to all APP PhD students (Rice EU graduate students who participate are not eligible for APP support and will not receive APPL 750 credit).Â
