The 2nd Annual SCI Summer Research Colloquium will take place on Friday, August 12, 2016 at Duncan Hall from 8:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.
The purpose of the SCI Summer Research Colloquium is to provide undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers working at Rice with an opportunity to present their most recent work. The Colloquium includes presentations from students in both the Nakatani Research & International Experiences for Students (RIES) program , participants of the RET program, Research Experience for Teachers, who participate in a 6-week internship in a nanotechnology laboratory, and students from other Rice University REU programs and undergraduate summer interns.
Presentations - either talks or posters - are formal, as in professional international conferences. However, the audience, consisting of Rice students and faculty members, is very informal and friendly, which makes the Colloquium a great occasion for honing the presenters' communications skills.
Some abstracts by graduate students and post-docs will be selected for oral presentations, to be presented throughout the day.  Most of the submitted abstracts are selected for posters, which are presented in two separate sessions.  Food and drinks are provided at various times throughout the day as well, including coffee service for breaks and beer and wine in the evening.
Prizes are awarded for the top four (4) oral presentations, top four (4) undergraduate posters, and top four (4) graduate posters.  Past prizes have included $500 and $250 cash prizes and LabView licenses. Two new features were introduced in 2014: the "RQI Choice Awards" (renamed to SCI Choice Awards for 2015 and beyond), in which the event guests will vote for the best in each category and an Awards Ceremony at which the winners are announced.
We hope you will enjoy hearing the latest exciting results of our multi-disciplinary research community! A program with the abstracts of the presentations and individual abstracts will be available closer to the event date.
