Quantum sensing exploits quantum phenomena, e.g. the quantum coherence of small systems for ultrasensitive detection. Even though quantum sensors such as superconducting quantum interference devices and atomic clocks have existed since the 1960’s, recent developments in the science and technology of spin qubits, trapped ions, and nanomaterials have imparted a strong acceleration to this research field. Quantum sensing is now expected to contribute to solving realistic problems in research and industry in the near future. With the present workshop we will bring together experts, users, government and private funding agencies, as well as journal editors, to discuss the most recent progress and technological advances in the field of quantum sensing. Our goal will be twofold: on the short term, to help define what kind of fundamental and applied problems should be accessible to quantum sensing; and on a longer timescale, to assess what scientific bottlenecks will have to be overcome, and what new scientific expertise will have to be created, to allow quantum sensing to progress meaningfully beyond the present.
